Support for Students Experiencing Racial Trauma

February 23, 2022

Whether you or someone you know has experienced microaggressions, harassment, or discrimination, instances of racism deepen existing wounds and traumas and undermine our ability to collectively thrive as a community. Student Health on Haven is offering several options for students to reflect, connect and access support and gather information about available resources.

  • Counseling Services and Well-Being and Health Promotion are offering an in-person drop-in group support session from 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 25, in the Multi-purpose Room on the 3rd floor of Student Health on Haven, 100 Haven Avenue.
  • Counseling Services also offers meetings, called Support Sessions, that provide space for reflection, grounding, and support. Visit the Student Health Portal or call 212-305-3400 to schedule an individual Support Session.

The following confidential resources are always available for individual support:

  • Counseling Services Appointments: Make an appointment via the Student Health Portal or by calling 212-305-3400 (for after-hours care, select option 7).
  • Well-Being Strategy Sessions: Email studentwellbeing@cumc.columbia.edu to schedule a session with a member of the Well-Being and Health Promotion team.
  • Office of the University Chaplain: Email chaplain@columbia.edu to schedule an appointment to speak with someone from the Columbia University Chaplain’s Office for counseling and pastoral care with one of the Religious Life Advisors.

In addition, students can reach out to Student Health on Haven’s Counseling Services 24/7 by calling 212-305-3400 (for after-hours care, select option 7).

Community care during these times is critical. We encourage you to be gentle with yourselves and rely on one another and on the many resources available via Student Health on Haven and CUIMC.
